Bishop's Blessings Beyond

Bishop’s Blessings Beyond the Diocese

This summer four members of our diocese will travel to our Partner- ship Diocese of Masasi. Bishop Mary Irwin-Gibson will be accompa- nied by her husband Mark, Beth Reed, Chair of the Partnership Com- mittee and the Rev’d Victor David Mbuyi-Bipungu.

The members of our Montreal PWRDF Committee are working with our Diocesan Partnerships Committee to help raise at $5000 to send with our bishop, to provide small gifts for the many parishes, schools and orphanages that she will visit. Some families in the Diocese of Ma- sasi live on less than a dollar a day, and the church is one of the biggest providers of social and economic supports to meet basic needs.

Critical needs include:

  • Food, school fees and school uniforms for children

  • Repairs for church structures and priests’ homes

  • Sandals and shoes for priests who walk from parish to parish

  • Medical and hygiene supplies for nursing stations

  • Fees and books for Seminarians

  • Books and supplies for the new Bible School in Masasi that will be

    officially opened by Bishop Mary

If every parish in our Diocese contributes to this project Bishop’s Blessings Beyond the Diocese, it will be possible to reach our target, or more, for sending our blessings with Bishop Mary.

Many ways to raise funds!

A cupcake sale, a silent auction during coffee time, a soup lunch after church, or just a free-will donation basket at every church gathering, deanery meeting, or Sunday service are some of the ways to make Mission in Masasi possible. Please be generous! Just as our God is so generous!

We also encourage individuals to write personal prayers to send with Bishop Mary, to be shared with the communities she visits. The name of the author and parish should be included.

Many ways to donate!

Cheques to the Anglican Diocese of Montreal can be sent directly to Jennifer James-Phillips at 1444 Union Ave., Montreal, Quebec, H3A 2B8. Indicate the project, Bishop’s Blessings Beyond, at the bottom of the cheque.

Online giving

Alternatively, donations may be made through your local church. Tax receipts will be issued for all identified donations of $10 or more. This minimum may vary from parish to parish.

Thank you!

Lorna Fisher Honored with Canadian Volunteer Medal by Bishop Mary Irwin-Gibson

Lorna Fisher Honored with Canadian Volunteer Medal by Bishop Mary Irwin-Gibson

Fisher was presented with the medal by the Anglican Bishop of Montreal, the Right Reverend Mary Irwin Gibson, in a ceremony at Christ Church Beaurepaire.

Fisher, who began volunteering at the downtown mission in 1996, said she was humbled by the honour.

“I was absolutely stunned. It came out of the blue. What I’ve said to some friends is so many others do so much more, I’m not really sure I’m worthy of it,” she said. “But it was being offered and I’m taking it,” she added with a laugh.

Fisher, who’s lived in Kirkland since 1978, got involved with volunteering after a 33-year career at the Royal Bank of Canada.

 A Message from Susan Winn

Bishop’s Blessing Beyond 2018

Bishop Mary is planning to visit Masasi this summer. There is a way that we can send our affection and support with her as she visits in our Partnership Diocese.

Over the last ten years in partnership with the Diocese of Masasi in Tanzania, a number of our Montreal parishes have hosted visiting Masasi bishops and clergy during their visits here.

In 2015 Bishop James Almasi and Canon Geoffrey Monjesa visited St. James Church in Hudson, St. Mark’s Church in Dorval, St. Peter’s Church in TMR, La Nativite, St. Paul’s in Knowlton, the Parish of Rawdon, Christ Church cathedral and the Montreal Diocesan Theological College. A number of our churches have supported the Mothers’ Union in their work with women and children. In addition, many parishes have supported PWRDF projects to provide seeds, tools and training for farmers to grow new food crops.

Our face to face meetings have enabled us to learn about our very diverse challenges, and to pray for one another as partners in the work that Jesus Christ has called us to do in His name.

At this time we have an opportunity to share tokens of our affection with these African partners. As Bishop Mary and three others travel through Masasi, they will witness the many needs and ministries in our partnership diocese. In small ways, our contributions can make a difference.

If every parish in the Diocese of Montreal could host an event, or provide an initiative, that would raise some funds for Bishop Mary to take with her, to be used at her discretion as she visits schools, orphanages and parishes along the way, these small gifts would remind our partners that we are with them in Spirit, and we care for their wellbeing. Gifts might include contributions to children’s food programs, school uniforms, books for the Bible school or shoes for priests who travel on foot from parish to parish.

In a country where many families live on less than a dollar a day, every dollar we raise will make an enormous difference.

In addition to funds, Bishop Mary would appreciate prayers written by people in our churches. Our bishop would carry our handwritten prayers to read to our partners during services and celebrations.  If you do write a personal prayer, please include the name of your parish and your own name so that Bishop Mary can explain where the prayers originated.

Funds may be forwarded to the Anglican Diocese of Montreal, by cheque, (clearly marked, Bishop’s  Blessing Beyond) or in cash delivered to Jennifer James Phillips in the Accounting Office, or by using Canada Helps. Linked HERE

Tax receipts will be sent to all donors.

Prayers can be mailed to Bishop Mary at the Diocesan Offices.  Thank you for your generosity.
