The anglican diocese of montreal

Bishop's Communiqué - January 31, 2012

February-01-12// by: Marcel de Hêtre

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

I greet you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Peace be with you.

I will be away from the Diocese from February 16th to 20th on a study leave. I will be participating in a pilgrimage to Israel and Palestine with the Dean and other clergy from our Diocese; along with clergy from the Church of England. During my study leave, The Venerable James W. Bennett, Archdeacon of Montreal, will be my commissary.

During the Sundays of the Epiphany, the gospel readings have invited us to reflect upon the call of the disciples by Jesus. Sunday, February 12th, 2012 has been designated as Theological Education Sunday in the Diocese. I encourage you to review the materials that have been sent out from the Montreal Diocesan Theological College and incorporate, as seems appropriate, into the liturgy. May I encourage you to prayerfully discern if there are members of your community whom you sense may have a vocation to ordain ministry and speak to them about the resources available to assist them in this discernment.

At 10 am on Sunday, February 5th, I will be present at the Church of the Redeemer, Weir for the deconsecration ceremony. Color will be white for any clergy who are able to attend. Although the church in the town of Weir will be closed, the Parish of Arundel and Weir will continue in their ministry together at Grace Church, Arundel.

On January 8th, the vestry of St Columba’s, NDG voted to sell their church building and hall, but to retain the rectory. The congregation of St Columba’s will remain together and is looking at its future direction in ministry.

The Revd Canon Ralph Leavitt has accepted my appointment as Incumbent to the Parish of Holy Trinity, Ste-Agathe. The appointment is effective April 1, 2012. His induction will be April 15th at 4pm at Ste-Agathe. Clergy are invited to vest, color being red. Ralph is currently the Incumbent at St George's, Place du Canada. As of September 1st, God willing, I will be appointing Ralph as the Archdeacon of St Andrews. He will be collated at Synod 2012.

The Revd Dr Peter Prosser has accepted my appointment as Priest-in-Charge for a one-year period at the Parish of the Lower Laurentians effective January 1, 2012.

The Revd Canon David Sinclair has accepted my appointment to be the Priest-in-Charge of Grace Church, Arundel for a one year contract, one third time.

With Archdeacon Edward Simonton on sabbatical and then moving to the Diocese of Quebec and the pending appointment of Canon Leavitt as Archdeacon of St Andrew's, Executive Archdeacon Janet Griffith will be Acting Territorial Archdeacon of St Andrew's from January 16 through to September 1, 2012.

I am pleased to announce my appointment of The Very Revd Paul Kennington, Dean of Montreal and Rector of Christ Church Cathedral as the new Diocesan Liturgical Officer of the Diocese.

I am also pleased to announce that the Revd Stephen Petrie, Chaplain, Ste-Anne’s Veteran Hospital, has accepted the appointment of Ecumenical Officer for the Diocese.

We have fair-trade coffee beans for sale at $20 a bag. The proceeds go to support the Youth Ambassadors in their relationship with our partner diocese of APCI. Please call the front desk should you be interested in purchasing the coffee for a great cause. Spread the word!

The Right Revd Russell Hatton, former Assistant Bishop of Montreal and Archdeacon of Bedford/South Shore, died January 14, 2012. Please extend your prayers and sympathy to his wife Barbara and children Brooke and Wendy.

The Revd Rick Gariepy’s father, Emile Gariepy (who's been on the Clergy Prayer List) passed away on January 25th. His memorial service will be at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home on Saturday February 11th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to La Maison de Soins Palliatifs Source Bleue 1130 rue de Montbrun, Boucherville, Quebec, J4B 8W6. Your prayers are asked for his beloved wife Lorraine of 56 years, sons Rick, Kevin, Andrew and daughter Melanie.

We will be holding our annual Information Day for Parish Communicators & Secretaries on Saturday March 17th at St Paul’s Lachine from 10 am to 1 pm. The new Diocesan Website will be reviewed.

The Nominating Committee sometimes struggles with filling vacancies on diocesan committees. Your annual vestry meeting will provide an opportunity to ask parishioners if they are interested in serving on a committee. If you are able to gather names of potential volunteers, please forward contact information to Nicki Hronjak in the Programme Office.

To keep you informed, the new Diocesan website should be fully operating in the next few weeks.

Blessings & peace,

+Barry
